The Office Contingencies exceeded to this sinall extent.
The Acting Surveyor General did not draw the full Salary of his appointment, and for a portion of the year the post of Assistant Surveyor General was not filled up.
1,740.12 | The Office of Clerk at Yokohama was vacant during the year. There was also a saving
in Allowances and Contingencies.
This is caused by the appointment of Chinese Writers, and Contingencies, in connection
with the Registration of Births and Deaths.
This covers New Boilers and Water Tanks for Steam Launch, Removal of Sunken
Rocks, and placing Beacons.
216.52 | No Adhesive Stamps were received during the year.
The amount of $362,80 was sauctioned by the Council for Furniture for the Supreme Court. The remaining excess covers the Salaries of the Acting Puisne Judge and Sheriff, which were not contemplated when the Estimates of 1873 were being framed.

This excess is caused by the additional Salary to the Superintendent of Civil Hospital,
by the Half Salary to Dr. McCoy, and Small Pox expenditure.
1,741.64 The Second Clerk having been suspended, the post was vacant for five months. Also
the Office of Assistant Usher and Hindustani Interpreter has not been filled up.
6,029.14. 128,913.78 The Force having been below its authorized strength, there was a saving to the full
extent here shown.
3,772.42 Decrease by reduction of Staff.
One-half of this excess was provided for by votes for Salaries and Contingencies of Department, but no vote was taken for the new Fire Engine and Alarm Bell,
although the purchase of both was sanctioned.
